Hi I'm Jon and I'd like to tell you a little about myself and to tell you why I am doing this.

I have just turned 42 and try to keep myself reasonable fit thorugh swimming, triathlons and plenty of walking.

I live in Denmead, which is down on the South coast and perfect location for sea swimming.

I am doing this challenge for two reasons : firstly I love open water and sea swimming. Then secondly because my 11 year old son has been a Type 1 diabetic for the last 5 and a half years and I want to raise money for this charity to give them a chance to be able to find the cure that all of them need.

NIX SHAW

My name is Nix, I am 39 years old and live in Hampshire.

I have been a keen swimmer since my Dad taught me how to swim as a small child, but I discovered a passion for open water swimming about 4 years ago.

Since then I have competed in the London Triathlon Relay and completed the 7km swim across the Solent from Ryde Pier to the War Memorial, Southsea.

I had a fantastic summer training in the sea with the team, so when some-one suggested the channel relay I jumped at the opportunity.
As HR Manager for a charity providing support to adults with learning disabilities, I fully understand how difficult it is to raise desperately needed funds and I am really pleased to be offered this opportunity to give something back by raising money through this challenge for Diabetes UK.

My training this year has begun in the pool with regular 2 mile sessions. Before we jump back in the sea in May, I will be working hard to build up my speed and stamina in the pool so that I can cover as much ground as I can in each of my one hour swim slots on the day.

I am very much looking forward to the challenge of training over the next few months and that life affirming feeling that I only seem to get when I have immersed myself in cold water! Please do support our team in anyway you can.

After planning for, enjoying, and then winding down again from an amazing wedding last year I felt like I was ready for a new challenge - something I could focus my attention on and work towards.

A few months went by and this Channel Challenge caught my eye in the Diabetes UK Balance magazine.

I figured it was definitely a challenge and would take some working towards, but would be a great accomplishment for me. Also, if I could raise some money at the same time then all the better!

Diabetes UK is a great cause and as far as I know they are the only charity that enable people like me to take part and do this challenge. If you are not diabetic yourself then I am sure you know of someone, or perhaps are related to someone, who is. Diabetes is a growing problem in the UK.

I’m not claiming that by doing this I’m going to cure the illness, but I am hoping that I’ll be able to raise the £950 that I have pledged to raise, which will go a little way towards a charity that helps so many people in the UK every day. It’s my way of giving something back.
